ShadowLight presents a special “sneak peak” work-in-progress presentation of its latest project, THE REBIRTH OF APSARA, a new experimental shadow dance theater work created by shadow master Larry Reed and master classic Cambodian dancer/choreographer Charya Burt.

Charya spent her impressionable years under the Pol Pot regime and her growth into a master dancer was greatly influenced by the few artists who survived the atrocities. From her personal perspective, the show explores the classical Cambodian Dance from Golden Age in the 1960′s to its present day resurrection after suffering devastating destruction during the Khmer Rouge era.

Coupled with Charya’s classican and re-invisioned choreography, Larry’s one-of-a-kind shadowcasting technique, which ingeniously integrate shadow puppets and performers in a live montage, will give the visual and contextual background for the project, which aims to strike a balance between highly personal narrative and the epic-backdrop of the tumultuous modern Cambodian history.

The fans of ShadowLight’s work, take note! For this project, Larry is experimenting with new light sources for the first time in more than 10 years. So it would be a treat to see what he’s up to and get a glimpse of the process incorporating and adjusting to the new technology!

The evening’s event is presented at SOMArts through participation in the Affordable Space Program, which provides below-market rental space, production and publicity assistance to nonprofit organizations. For more information visit our rentals page.
