Somarts and the San Francisco Art Institute City Studio have teamed up to offer Ceramics Art Classes to San Francisco youth ages 12 to 19. The City Studio Program’s mission is to offer art classes to underserved youth, in their own neighborhoods and ultimately, to assist them in preparing a portfolio for application to college. Student’s will have the opportunity to work with today’s leading artists, learn new art making techniques and earn a stipend at the completion of the semester.
SFAI’s City Studio was initiated in 2005, and had been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Haas Foundation, the Irvine Foundation, the SURDNA foundation, and many other organizations.
Classes start February 2 and will meet weekly either on Wednesdays from 4:00pm to 7:00pm or Fridays from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Teaching artist Allison Taylor will lead the classes.
Students will develop the skills needed to work with clay and the use of clay in fine art vs. high craft. This class will incorporate several different beginning hand building techniques such as: pinch, coil and slab construction. Student’s will also learn how to use a potter’s wheel and how to treat the surface of the clay; color, texture, functionality.
Prospective students will need to complete and return an applicationvia email or mail or bring to the first class, to be considered for the program. Contact JD Beltran at firstname.lastname@example.org or 415.351.3530 for more information.
