Passed down to Hupa elder Clarence Hostler by his grandmother, the story of Skatsaree describes a man's spiritual quest and the lessons the world offers him. Hostler's ancestral fire pithas been dated at 7,000 years -- this story from the High Dance People is as old as the tribe's presence in California. The project offers an unusual, enlightening perspective on the social and environmental issues affecting our society and highlights roots of a philosophy towards nature and unfamiliar cultures that persists to this day. Our project is unique. Rather than moving from a written story to the screen, we start with oral histories, translate them to shadows, and then to the video screen. We provide a space for Native Americans to tell, dance, and sing their own stories, using the magic of shadows to enhance the visual impact, and the power of digital video to convey their stories to a national audience.
