"Josephine the Mouse Singer" originates in Franz Kafka's fable of a beautiful artist who breaks the mouse rules. The Last Planet Theatre production of McClure's 1978 play offers a rare collaboration by two of the Bay Area¹s most innovative and prolific artists.

Michael McClure is the author of numerous volumes of poetry, plays, and essays. His plays have received three Obie awards and provoked controversy: performances of "The Beard" were closed down by police during its LA run. He has recently performed his poetry in concert with former Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek.

Terry Riley is an acclaimed avant garde composer and longtime associate of the Kronos Quartet and other ensembles. His seminal 1964 work "IN C" launched the minimalist movement and influenced his peers Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and John Adams and rock groups such as The Who and Tangerine Dream.

"Josephine' is the story of the creative and independent spirit in each person," said McClure. "This new production is apt right now, when speaking out and deep feeling make more and more of us akin to outlaws in a society that is growing deaf."

The Last Planet Theatre, founded in 1998 by John Wilkins, has produced Harold Pinter's "Moonlight" and The Wallace Shawn Theatre Festival. Wilkins directed this production of "Josephine". "We wanted to tap into its operatic qualities and let it loose from the conventions of small experimental theatre," he said.
