STERN
GROVE FESTIVAL PRESENTS
"ASIAN MASSIVE"
ARTIST KARSH KALE
|
Experience
the next wave of South Asian music when Stern Grove Festival presents
Karsh Kale in a free "Musical Conversation" performance/lecture
A
leading U.S. figure in the Asian Massive movement, Karsh infuses
the traditional sounds of ancient India with post-millennial electronic
dance styles such as trance and drum 'n' bass. Born in the U.K.
of Indian parents and raised in America, Karsh's percussion and
production style reflects the influences of jazz, rock, hip-hop,
and modern electronic music as much as Indian classical and folk
music. Blending sarangi, flutes, and vocals with hypnotic electronica
on Realize, his recent Six Degrees Records debut, Kale carves his
own unique niche in pan-global music. Karsh has previously collaborated
with artists such as DJ Spooky, Herbie Hancock and acclaimed producer
Bill Laswell, whose revolutionary Tabla Beat Science project featured
Kale alongside tabla master Zakir Hussain.
In
addition to the lecture/performance at SomArts Cultural Center,
Karsh will appear with Laswell, Hussain, Talvin Singh, and Ustad
Sultan Khan in an exclusive, world premiere free performance at
Stern Grove Festival on Sunday, August 12.
