Música Cubana: Roots to Timba

Thanks to the Creative Work Fund and SomArts, Roberto Borrell and Orquesta la Moderna Tradición, along with some heavy hitting guest artists coming up from Cuba specifically for this event, will take you on a musical journey through 150 years of Cuban music and dance.

Guest artists will include Gregorio "El Goyo" Hernandez Rios and friends, who has sung for many years with legends such as Tata Guines, Ibrahim Ferrer, and Ry Cooder, among others. He is one of the most celebrated "Rumberos" alive today, as well as being a founding member and lead singer of Conjunto Folklórico Cubano.

We are also bringing dancers from "Carnival and Espactaculos" of Cuba, including members of Roberto Borrell's family who have worked professionally with Roberto since the 1960's (Marta Meza Vazquez, Clara Martinez Molina, Rigoberto Borrell Duquesne, Marcos Antonio Borrell Duquesne, all original members of Roberto's Kubatà). Finally we are bringing as a complement to "el Goyo", renowned singer Lazaro Rizo Cuevas.

Local talent such as the orquesta's own Michael Spiro and Kash Killion as well as guests Bill Ortiz and Julius Melendez will also be performing, among others. We will present the three most influential roots of Cuban music: French and Haitian influenced Contra-danza, which evolved through Danza to Danzòn and into modern into Charanga; Spanish influenced country music, Guajira to Trova and Bolero, the legendary Son as it developed into Son Montuno; and African-Cuban music, the roots of Rumba, Abakua music, out of which came the Rumba genres Guaguancò as well as Conga. All music will be accompanied by dance (where appropriate).
