The
weekend events honor the movement for peace and global harmony, and
showcase the important, and critical role that alternative media is
playing in these troubled times. It is the organizers hopes to provide
a forum for concerned citizens to get involved with organizations working
for social change and global peace, or in other words, "if we don't
act now, we deserve what we get."

the
2002 Rolling Peace Party begins with a celebration of the San Francisco
Mime Troupe's 41st season of Free Shows in the Parks. Immediately following
the World Premiere performance of the Troupe's new show, "Mr. Smith
Goes to Obscuristan" in Dolores Park (band @ 1:30/show @ 2), SomArts
Gallery will open its doors for a gala cast party, featuring a Mime
Troupe Band alumni reunion jam session coordinated by Randy Craig, welcoming
remarks from Global Exchange founder Medea Benjamin and Mike Dolan of
the Rolling Thunder Downhome Democracy tour, music by the Spitters,
the Babar Jug Band, Pat Wynne & Bernard Gilbert and members of the
SF Rockin' Solidarity Labor Chorus, and Our Band. At 5 pm, FLASHPOINTS
- KPFA's nationally syndicated investigative newsmagazine with host
Dennis Bernstein - will broadcast live from the SomArts main stage with
a special Fourth of July edition focused on cultural activism and a
tribute to Woody Guthrie, featuring most of the above and more. The
Main Hall will host an exhibition and sale of traditional handwoven
Navajo rugs by Weaving for Freedom/Women in Resistance from Big Mountain,
Arizona and "25 Years of Resistance Photography" by acclaimed photographer
Lisa Law.

The
evening begins at 5 pm with opening receptions for: LaborFest 2002,
featuring paintings by Mike Connor and photographs by Joe Blum; an anti-war
art show with work from Jos Sances, Barbara Lubin, Doug Minkler, John
Gruntfest, Mission Grafica, the East Bay Collective, Estria and Jack
Freeman; and Weaving For Freedom. FLASHPOINTS broadcasts again, live
at 5, with a whole new lineup drawn from the day's events. At 6 pm LaborFest
will screen STRANGE FRUIT by Joel Katz and PIQUETEROS, an American premiere
about the labor movement in Argentina. At 8 pm, get ready for a special
four hour live broadcast of KPFA's hot variety show "La Onda Bajita"
with hosts El Gavilan, Jime Malo, and Norma La Brava, opening with the
AIM All Nations Drum, with hourly panel discussions on the other side
of patriotism: Women in Resistance; Forever War/El Mundo en Crisis;
Slabor (slave-labor); and Arte, Resistancia y Brown Profiling (invited
guests include Jello Biafra, Nancy Charraga, Marie Acosta, Sheila Blackgoat,
Christy Lubin, Camilo Olmos, Yazmin Garcia, Gabriel Hernandez, Rene
Yanez, Gloria La Riva, Sophie Maxwell, Francisco Herrera and more) with
live performances interspersed throughout by Teo Kalli Amuta, La Plebe,
Fox Gluv and Creation. The evening concludes with an outdoor sound and
projection environment created by Roots & Branches, with special appearances
by Fat Chance Belly Dance and other surprise guests.

The
Saturday accent is on organizing and alternative media, with a liberal
dose of fun. Doors open early for children's activities, workshops and
a wide variety of music and entertainment. San Francisco District Attorney
Terence Hallinan heads up a roster of speakers dedicated to positive
social change. Attendees can learn more about the Rolling Thunder Down
Home Democracy Tour, can sign on for Media Alliance and Global Exchange
events, and get involved with other progressive organizatons. Invited
speakers include Supervisors Tom Ammiano, Sophie Maxwell and Chris Daly,
as well as community leader Enola D. Maxwell, and author Rebecca Solnit.
The film and video program curated by Kevin Epps, director of STRAIGHT
OUTTA HUNTERS POINT, features Whispering Dreams' THE PIES THE LIMIT,
Youth in Action's HUNTERS POINT ON FIRE, 12 DEEP - a series of shorts
from the East Bay Asian Youth Coalition and selections from the upcoming
Hiphop Film Fest, with additional offerings from LaborFest 2002. Films
will screen throughout the afternoon beginning at 2pm. Music will be
provided indoors and out by the Blues Fuse (1pm), the Babar Jug Band
(2pm), the BushLaden Band (2:30pm), The InsideUp Band (5pm), Red Dust
(4pm), the Wildcat Canyon Band (3pm), the Dick Deluxe Review (5pm),
Chuck Miller, and many more.
