Rolling peace party   Print  E-mail

The weekend events honor the movement for peace and global harmony, and showcase the important, and critical role that alternative media is playing in these troubled times. It is the organizers hopes to provide a forum for concerned citizens to get involved with organizations working for social change and global peace, or in other words, "if we don't act now, we deserve what we get."

the 2002 Rolling Peace Party begins with a celebration of the San Francisco Mime Troupe's 41st season of Free Shows in the Parks. Immediately following the World Premiere performance of the Troupe's new show, "Mr. Smith Goes to Obscuristan" in Dolores Park (band @ 1:30/show @ 2), SomArts Gallery will open its doors for a gala cast party, featuring a Mime Troupe Band alumni reunion jam session coordinated by Randy Craig, welcoming remarks from Global Exchange founder Medea Benjamin and Mike Dolan of the Rolling Thunder Downhome Democracy tour, music by the Spitters, the Babar Jug Band, Pat Wynne & Bernard Gilbert and members of the SF Rockin' Solidarity Labor Chorus, and Our Band. At 5 pm, FLASHPOINTS - KPFA's nationally syndicated investigative newsmagazine with host Dennis Bernstein - will broadcast live from the SomArts main stage with a special Fourth of July edition focused on cultural activism and a tribute to Woody Guthrie, featuring most of the above and more. The Main Hall will host an exhibition and sale of traditional handwoven Navajo rugs by Weaving for Freedom/Women in Resistance from Big Mountain, Arizona and "25 Years of Resistance Photography" by acclaimed photographer Lisa Law.
