This exhibition will be held in conjunction with the exhibit “The Courtly Art of the Ancient Maya” at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Our intention at SomArts Cultural Center is to reach a wide audience who might not otherwise be aware of the richness of the Maya heritage, and to make them aware of the magnificent exhibition at the Legion of Honor. 

SomArts Gallery will include an installation of works of contemporary and traditional artists from Guatemala, featured in a huge space suggesting the feeling of the plazas of the ancient Maya. The contemporary artworks will appear as part of a continuity of forms and color from the ancestors, invoking the time of this great civilization. There will be an educational component as well to the entire show. Our hope is that there will be a continuing exchange between the exhibitions during the month of September.
