Vebjorn Sand
April 13, 1999 - May 7, 1999 Opening reception Tuesday, April 13, 5:30-8pm Vebjørn Sand's work is being introduced to North America for the first time. The exhibition of his paintings, sketches, and structural plans for three of his public projects, The Leonardo Project, The Troll Castle Project, and The Kepler Star Project, opens at the American Institute of Architects Headquarters Gallery in Washington DC on November 12, 1998. It will then travel to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design Gallery in Minneapolis, opening Jan. 22, continuing to Chicago, San Francisco, and New York. The title of this exhibition is Sand's motto, "Ad Fontes" and means "Return to the Origins." It refers to the rich creative traditions of Western art, and the inner source of spiritual power which is the point of departure for all creative innovation. "I believe there is a real role in contemporary society for a guardian of tradition." said Sand. "Above all, I want to express intense alive-ness, best expressed in the Norwegian word 'begeistring.' This liveliness is the germ of all growth, all life. I have encountered this intense living essence for myself in Art."
The traveling exhibition is sponsored by the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce, The Royal Norwegian Embassy, The Norwegian Public Roads Administration, The Norwegian Industrial and Regional Development Fund, and The Norwegian Foreign Ministry, with support from The American Institute of Architects and The American Architectural Foundation.
