The Coalition on Homelessness (COH) seeks to bring public attention tothe comprehensive needs of homeless people, especially, homeless families and immigrants residing in San Francisco. Homelessness is not a crime! However, many homeless individuals are being criminalized. The Coalition on Homelessness seeks your support in our demands that Gavin Newsom and the City of San Francisco:
1. Place homeless families directly in housing, and stop the merry-go-round of homeless families' faces in San Francisco 2. That 25% of the 3,000 units of City housing for homeless people be made available to homeless families. 3. Distribute 120 housing subsidies for homeless families at $500 per family, per month 4. That homeless prevention funds in San Francisco be tripled.
In addition, the needs of immigrants who have become homeless areoften different than the needs of homeless Americans. Immigrants may be adjusting to a new language and culture and may also face unique challenges with respect to employment, health and legal issues. To make matters worse, most shelters and drop-in centers are not mandated to meet the needs of immigrants who have become homeless. There have been few systemic attempts to develop shelter and drop-in policies that are accessible, appropriate, and responsive to the needs of homeless immigrants and families.
