This year’s title and theme of our annual Day of the Dead exhibition (October 7 — November 5, 2011) is Illuminations, chosen to symbolize a source of light for spiritual and intellectual reflection through artwork and installations. Curators Rene & Rio Yañez seek artists to create traditional altars for the exhibit as well as works that reflect contemporary views and visions of honoring the dead. Artists who have participated in past exhibitions are welcome to submit again. For full instructions on how to submit a proposal before the August 15th deadline, please click here.
An informational meeting for Illuminations artists will be conducted by the curators at SOMArts Cultural Center on Wednesday, August 10th at 6:30pm. Attendance is strongly suggested as Rene & Rio Yañez will discuss the materials that will be used to structure the exhibit and the meeting will allow you to become familiar with fellow artists.
Illuminations continues to examine the ways technology shapes how we celebrate Day of the Dead. Once again our Flickr group enables us to accept digital photos as offerings to those who people want to honor. The public can join the Digital Offerings Flickr Group to submit. Selected images will be printed and displayed as part of the exhibit.
