SOMArts is currently seeking a director of facilities and technical operations. This is a senior-level position at a highly collaborative arts nonprofit that presents exhibitions and performances in addition to providing vital support services to more than 80 Bay Area arts and cultural nonprofits each year. Founded in 1979, SOMArts embraces the entire spectrum of arts practice and cultural identity, and is beloved in San Francisco as a truly multicultural, community-built space where cutting-edge events and counterculture commingle with traditional art forms.
SOMArts’ 26,190 sq ft facility includes 3 administrative offices, 99-seat expandable black box theater, darkroom, printmaking, ceramics and dance studios, 3 classrooms, Bay Gallery, Main Gallery

Job Title: Director of Facilities and Technical Operations
Hours: Full-time/40hrs per week, exempt
Schedule: Schedule will include evenings and weekends
Reports to: Executive Director
Supervises: Maintenance Assistant, Building Managers, AVL Technicians and Building Contractors
Core Responsibilities: Manage and maintain SOMArts Cultural Center facilities including the Bay Gallery, Main Gallery, classrooms, tenant and internal offices. Oversees the Affordable Space Program which provides space and support services to Bay Area arts and culture organizations.
-Maintain appropriate operating condition of the theater, galleries, classrooms and storage spaces.
-Serve as a production manager, managing the planning, budgeting, staffing, staging, restore and changeovers of internal and client produced events.
-Maintain standards and procedures for technical production and client services.
-Supervise proper use, storage and maintenance of all equipment and supplies including lighting equipment, audio equipment, video equipment, drapes, staging, hardware, tools, etc.
-Facilitate restore and transitions between events.
-Plan and schedule equipment, services and staffing for all events.
-Prepare quotes, quote revisions and final invoices for clients.
-Produce budgets, production timelines, floor plans, plots, schematics and technical information for staff, crew, artists, contractors and clients.
-Negotiate and coordinate equipment rentals and services from vendors.
-Prepare quarterly and annual budgets for labor, equipment and supplies to be submitted to and approved by the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
-Accurately track labor, budgets and invoicing for all events, clients and projects.
-Attend and facilitate production meetings with staff and clients.
-Manage the maintenance of a 25,000+ square foot building including 2 art galleries, theater with stage, artist studios, dance studio and offices.
-Plan, implement, budget, schedule and manage technical upgrades and physical plant improvements utilizing staff and/or contractors.
-Maintain facilities intranet site including event calendar, staff scheduling, policies, staff reports forms and building operations manual.
-Revise rental policies and procedures as necessary.
-Process contractor invoices and technical crew time sheets.
-Coordinate with city departments including the SF Arts Commission, Department of Building Inspections, Fire Department and the Department of Real Estate regarding permits and large scale building upgrades.
-Obtain quotes from contractors for maintenance and upgrades.
-Provide IT service options and support for clients and artists.
-Hire, supervise and schedule technical, facilities and event staff.
-Strong organizational skills and the ability interact positively and professionally with staff and constituents and to perform job duties while in stressful situations
-Minimum of 3 years working in a professional event production environment
-Demonstrated knowledge of lighting, sound and rigging
-Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to complete tasks thoroughly and efficiently
-Available to work a flex schedule that includes evening and weekend hours.
-Willing to actively support and work alongside of contemporary works of art and performances that present challenging and provocative subject matter
-Current drivers license
-Familiarity with San Francisco arts and culture landscape
-Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and written communications effectively
-Substantial physical movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
-Ability to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction with good eye and hand coordination
-Lift, move, and carry up to 50 pounds on occasion
Salary and benefits are competitive based on experience, as informed by the recommendations of the Northern California Nonprofit Salary Survey.
