Job Opportunity: Gallery Assistant

SOMArts is seeking a part-time Gallery Assistant position to support the Mobile Arts Platform project and other gallery programming. This fast-paced, creative and highly detail-focused position will be responsible for coordinating all publicity management, community outreach coordination, preparation, installation and event management for the MAP project and will provide support in these areas for concurrent gallery programs. This is a grant-funded position.

Work Expectation: Gallery Assistant is expected to work minimum of 12 hour per week plus some weekends and special events such as gallery receptions as needed.

Compensation: $400 monthly stipend.

Dates: January 24, 2011 – July 25, 2010

Education: Graduate or college degree required.

Major/area(s) of study: Fine art, curatorial practice, art history, arts administration, or arts related field.

Core Responsibility: To manage and administrate, as well as be liaison for all project related issues regarding the SOMArts Mobile Arts Platform project.

Purpose: Assist the Gallery Director with the following:

Ensure safe handling of artwork and safe work practices in exhibition installation and removal; assist in construction and arranging displays;

Manage social media and scheduling of gallery events;

Write publicity material, explanatory catalogs for exhibits, text panels, artwork labels and other materials for various programs and workshops;

Document and catalog all artwork entering or leaving the gallery, maintaining accurate records of date, name of the artists and the exhibit, condition of the artwork, insurance and contract status, etc.;

Create and maintain artist files by organizing artist bio, CV, and other pertinent information on computer database, and in the main gallery for the public;

Data entry, and providing administrative support to the Gallery Director;

Other activities as needed.

Preferred Skills: Link to local community of artists and arts professionals and press; meticulous writing, and strong office skills; ability to present the organization in a professional and public manner; ability to work against deadlines; a willingness to work creatively and ambitiously with diverse constituents and modest budget; ability to work both independently on project tasks as well as in collaboration with institutions, guest curators and artists; ability to work physically on exhibition installation and gallery maintenance; and, the ability to juggle multiple tasks and projects in a busy environment. Other computer skills such as Photoshop, InDesign, Google Sketchup, and WordPress, Dreamweaver etc. a plus.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
