“Silent Karaoke with Paul de Jong and Snippet interviews with Lori Gordon” on Thursday, April 11, 7–9pm is an opportunity to experience karaoke as you never have before— without speakers; de Jong’s audience-participatory live sculpture consists of a karaoke booth equipped with headphones that broadcasts each performance via radio airwaves and online streaming. Several radio handsets will be available in the gallery for observing the performances.
Lori Gordon’s “Snippets” encourages the viewer to actively consider and appreciate parts of conversations out of context. Gordon invites friends and strangers to display these statements in their windows or in other public spaces, and exhibits the documentation of this display as photography alongside the textual declarations as vinyl and paper signage. Gordon will collect snippets and through live interview sessions with gallery visitors at the event, and selected snippets will then become part of the installation until Dial Collect closes.
Dial Collect is one of four exhibition proposals selected to receive a 2012–13 Commons Curatorial Residency exhibition at SOMArts. Selected artists and curators receive curatorial stipends and a support package valued at over $20,000, as well as access to one of the largest and most beautiful gallery spaces in the heart of the city to expand their practice, engage the Bay Area’s cultural communities and turn vision into reality.
