BrettWalker_1

In this workshop, ArtSpan Artist Brett Walker shows the ins and outs of submitting your work to open calls for shows, publications, and how to apply for grants and residencies. Learn practical tips for finding open calls, maintaining a database of your submissions, preparing work and proposals to be sent out, and learn the best ways to get the right eyes on your artwork. Topics addressed will include: finding places to send your work, cold call versus open call, maintaining yearly records of where you send submissions, building your resume, finding publications, tailoring your submissions to land the right shows, and creating and maintaining a ready to use portfolio of your work, including slides, CV/resumes, art statements, and bios.

About the Presenter:
Born in Portland Oregon in 1982, San Francisco artist Brett Walker makes both moving and still pictures that dispel any preconceived notions of what it means to simultaneously be a husband and father, an artist and common laborer, a 33-year-old Caucasian living in one of the most expensive cities in the United States. Coming from a fifth generation garbage-hauling family whose stay at home mother raised him and his two sisters in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon, Walker has built his art practice into a tool for living, something that both justifies his existence and offers it up as an alternative to most commonly held ideas regarding social norms and expectations.

His work has been screened and exhibited throughout the United States and abroad, including shows at the John Michal Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and the Berkeley Art Museum in Berkeley, CA. Additionally, he has mounted multiple solo exhibitions at FourBarrel Coffee in San Francisco, which has also served as his place of employment since 2009. He has taught and lectured in a variety of different situations and contexts, including undergrad courses at UC Berkeley, photography workshops at the John Michal Kohler Art Center, visiting artist lectures at Stanford University, and in 2014, he launched the Brett Walker School Of Rock, a series of digital photography workshops taught out of his home studio in San Francisco.
