SOMArts Seeks Artists for Night Light: Multimedia & Performance Festival
About Night Light
SOMArts Cultural Center seeks artists of color to exhibit in the two-night, large-scale exhibition, Night Light: Multimedia & Performance Festival, on Friday and Saturday, August 25 and 26, 2017, 8:00 pm–midnight. Now entering its seventh year, Night Light blankets SOMArts indoors and out in luminous art installations, including audiovisual performances, performative interventions and digital and cinematic projections. In 2016, 80+ artists participated drawing a crowd of over 1,500 people. This year, Night Light will be co-curated by Karen Seneferu and Melorra Green and presented in conjunction with The Black Woman is God: Divine Revolution.
This Year’s Theme
Night Light’s 2017 curatorial theme, “Divine Revolution,” is informed by and complements the Main Gallery exhibition The Black Woman Is God, inviting artists of color of all ages and gender identities to propose new or existing works. Divine Revolution questions what it means to not only rewrite but create new narratives and new myths. How do new myths shape artists and participants? How does transformation become a spiritual and revolutionary act? This exhibit engages divinity by empowering artists of color to take back their time, their rest, and their creativity as a divine critical act, revealing how prayer and the convergences of our lives become transcendent through love.
How to Apply
Proposals must be received through the online form no later than 5pm on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 to be considered. Click here to submit your proposal online. Artists are encouraged to draft their responses in a separate document as the form will time-out after being open for a significant length of time. If you need technical assistance, or have questions of any kind, please email Carolina Quintanilla at email@example.com.
Though there are no strict limitations around the medium/s of artworks proposed, proposals that include self-illuminated artworks, such as light or shadow-based installations, video or multimedia works, or artworks or performances that are otherwise appropriate for dimly lit spaces, will be a strong fit for Night Light. Artworks involving fire or smoke machines are prohibited by SOMArts’ lease with the City of San Francisco.
As the exhibit takes shape, please be aware that spaces provided to artists can expand and contract based on the number of proposals accepted.
A/V support will be provided by SOMArts for performances, and installation assistance will be available, but all installations must be installed and tested by the artists from August 20–24. Artists must provide their own projectors.
