NutcrackOr is a world premiere full-length masterpiece by Man Dance Company (MDC) set in San Francisco’s historic Castro neighborhood in 1977.  It focuses on young Fritz and Clara, who upon gazing into Harvey Milk’s camera shop on Christmas Eve become inspired by his photos.

Later, in the ballet, their Uncle Drosselmeyer magically turns them into young adults, played by the 2012 & 2013 MDC Youth Competition Winners,  and reunites them with their beloved Nutcracker Doll.  Together, they travel to visit the inspiring individuals in Harvey’s photos, including Melek Taus, the Male Peacock Angel of the Kurdish Minority, and Xochipilli, the Mayan Flower Goddess of gender-variance.

The performance is presented at SOMArts through participation in the Affordable Space Program, which provides below-market rental space, production and publicity assistance to nonprofit organizations. For more information visit our rentals page.
