Ciudad Juárez, Mexico 2010: 3085 Murders, 1 Tarahumara Ladies Basketball Tournament is a solo exhibition of photographs by Robert Gomez in the Ramp Gallery, a secure all-access exhibition space located in the SOMArts lobby.
Juárez is the crucible of the Mexican American drug economy. This installation provides visual context for, and celebrates one example of the resilience of the people in one of the most violent cities in the world.
“Ten hands take ten lives in Ciudad Juarez every day. Every Sunday afternoon, however, ten women gather on a community-laid concrete court to play a game of basketball. It is not an overt act of defiance to the American and Mexican social pressures that make Juárez such a violent place to call home, but an act of competitive poetry,” said Gomez.
