SOMArts Seeks Gallery Intern

SOMArts is currently seeking an intern to help with its exhibition programming. The SOMArts Gallery Internship is designed to provide help with both the gallery administrative tasks and the installation of Main Gallery exhibitions, with instruction and supervision provided by Gallery Director Betsie Miller-Kusz. Duties may at times be mundane and sometimes very physical, as well as organizational and stimulating!  Ongoing responsibilities and include:

  • Assisting in the coordination of all communications with artists, galleries & other community arts organizations
  • Assisting with community outreach, including mailings, press releases and online marketing.
  • Assisting with gallery wall preparation.
  • Assisting with gallery artwork delivery, including unpacking and registration.
  • Assisting with exhibition details: labels, pricelists, artist bios, etc.
  • Assisting with exhibition opening receptions: food and wine service, setup and takedown.
  • Assisting with exhibition dismounting, packing and return to artists.


  • Excellent computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe and PageMaker a plus

  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent writing, interpersonal  and communication skills
Ability to work independently

  • Strong telephone skills
  • Ability to contribute creatively in a team-oriented, collaborative environment


  • Knowledge of local and regional museum or humanities organizations
  • Understanding of exhibitions as instructional programs
  • Understanding of audience development
  • Understanding of event / program planning

While performing the duties of this job, the intern is frequently required to talk or hear. The intern is required to stand, walk, and sit. The intern must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Minimum three-month commitment of 8hrs per week; day-to-day schedule may vary.
