July 14th marks the third of five performances for The Book, a series of contemporary dance based performances and accompanying Main Gallery exhibition created by Commons Curatorial Residency recipients, Avy K Productions. In addition to a free opening & closing event, The Book will include three ticketed performances (July 7, 14, & 21) and incorporate more than twenty artistic collaborators. Along with dance installations by Avy K Productions, this page of The Book will feature genre-defying beatmaker PC Muñoz, cutting edge choreographer Jesse Hewit, and hip-hop artist/beatboxer Tommy Shepherd.
About Jesse Hewit
Hewit is a San Francisco and Brooklyn based artist and performer. His original work, which is heavily influenced by his graduate studies in sociology, has been curated and produced in the Bay Area by numerous spaces and presenters including CounterPULSE, Kunst-Stoff, Dance Mission Theater, Z Space, and YBCA. Jesse is currently in his second year of curating various dance and performance events for the National Queer Arts Festival, including his acclaimed THIS IS WHAT I WANT (at SOMArts June 27 & 28). This year, Jesse was proud to be selected as a YBCA Bay Area Now 2011 artist, a recipient of the New Stages For Dance pilot season, and the winner of the SFBG Goldie Award for Performance.
About PC Muñoz
Muñoz is a drummer, beat maker, spoken-word vocalist, and producer. His genre-defying projects as an artist and producer include the CMJ-charting, spiritually-driven 2002 album A Good Deed in a Weary World, the award-winning multi-media project Twenty Haiku, and composer/cellist Joan Jeanrenaud‘s Grammy-nominated album Strange Toys. Muñoz will be on Marimbata, Black Cajon, and other percussion as part of this performance for The Book.
About Tommy Shepherd
Shepherd, also known as Soulati, is an actor, playwright, b-boy, rapper, drummer, and beat boxer. Tommy is co-founder of the group, Felonious, which blends live band musicianship, beat box acrobatics, MC freestyles, and witty lyricism with an elevated theatrical delivery. Shepherd is also one of three MCs in the live funk & hip hop band, Raw Deluxe. Tommy was a long time Hybrid Resident Artist at Intersection with Erika Chong Shuch and Dan Wolf. He is a member of the award-winning multi-cultural theater ensemble Campo Santo.
About The Book
The Book is an installation-performance series accompanying an ongoing exhibition based in experimental non-theater dance. Each performance is a random page from The Book, and each invites a different guest artist to enter the structure, created by Avy K Productions and collaborators, in order to destroy it and give it new life. Avy K brings together artists of different media to create improvisational multidisciplinary performances involving contemporary dance, live painting, evolving installation, video projection, and live music.
